I'm Yuhao, nice to e-meet you : )

I'm a Product Designer based in Toronto and a fan of foods that are vehicles for hot sauce. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's in UX Design from the University of Toronto, I've dedicated my career to leveraging my design skills to help companies, particularly startups, bring their innovative ideas to life with greater efficiency.

Research

Lean research & testing

While user-centricity is essential for creating relevant, usable, and desired solutions, excessive user research can backfire, resulting in unnecessary delays. To enable a faster research-to-design turnaround, I advocate for and practice a lean research methodology, which involves conducting generative and evaluative sessions quicker and more often to support informed decision-making, rather than performing research for its own sake.

Design

Rapid prototyping & robust conventions

Recognizing the importance of consistency and scalability in product design, I maintain an organized design space with close attention to documentation and naming conventions, as well as the management of component libraries and token systems. Additionally, my skills in Figma, low-code tools like Webflow, and knowledge of CSS, enable me to create designs that use 100% auto-layout and adhere to CSS Flexbox. All these together, allow me to prototype rapidly.

Hi, I'm Yuhao, nice to e-meet you

I'm a Product Designer based in Toronto. This is a story about me, how I became who I am now, and the things that have been shaping my life, along with some random thoughts about design.

It all begins with Psychology

I always had an interest in understanding the cognitive reasons behind human behaviour. This interest led me to pursue a degree in psychology, where I was immediately drawn to the complexities of the human psyche.

Longing to make an impact

I obtained my degree in psychology in June 2021, and was at a fork in the road. While I enjoyed the overall academic atmosphere, I was dissatisfied with the lack of direct and tangible impact I could make.

Transition to the world of design

Driven by the urge to create things that empower people, I contributed as a psychology consultant in an engineering project, where I was introduced to UXD, a field that provides an outlet for my design aspirations.

Fuel value delivery with speed

I see product design as an ever-evolving process fuelled by fast iteration. Leveraging my lean research and rapid prototyping skills, I aim to help organizations deliver values with a quicker turnaround.

Beyond the design board

In my spare time, I enjoy skiing, exploring museums, building Lego (made my first money at 14 by selling blueprints), reading golden age detective fiction (almost addictive), and of course, experimenting my design ideas.
